Ezekiel 18:20-28 ESV / 22 helpful votes Helpful Not Helpful The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. “But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. None of the transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness that he has done he shall live. Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? But when a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice and does the same abominations that the wicked person does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, for them he shall die. …

Psalm 1:1-6 ESV / 17 helpful votes Helpful Not Helpful Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; …

#2 “And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the justice (H6666) of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.” (Deut 33:21)

#3 “And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice (H6666) unto all his people.” (2 Sam 8:15)

#4 “Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice (H6663)!” (2 Sam 15:4)

To “do him justice” would be for Absalom to do the right thing in the causes presented to him.

#11 “Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice (H6663) to the afflicted and needy.” (Psa 82:3)

This verse really helps us to understand the meaning of Biblical justice. To do justice is to defend – stand up for the rights of – the poor, fatherless, afflicted and needy.

This verse equates perversion of judgment with oppression of the poor. True justice, then, would be to relieve the oppression of the poor.

18 “Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and justice (H6666) from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.” (Isa 9:7)

#22 “Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice (H6666) overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.” (Isa 59:9)

#23 “And judgment is turned away backward, and justice (H6666) standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.” (Isa 59:14)

#24 “Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice (H6666), and then it was well with him?” (Jer 22:15)

#27 “All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice (H6664), even the LORD, the hope of their fathers.” (Jer 50:7)

#28 “Thus saith the Lord GOD; Let it suffice you, O princes of Israel: remove violence and spoil, and execute judgment and justice (H6666), take away your exactions from my people, saith the Lord GOD.” (Eze 45:9)

Now look at this verse:

“Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful (H4941) and right (H6666), and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.” (Eze 18:19)

1 Kings 3:16-28 Solomon Wis

ely Judges16 Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 The one woman said, “Pardon me, my lord: [a]this woman and I live in the same house; and I gave birth to a child [b]while she was in the house. 18 And it happened on the third day after I gave birth, that this woman also gave birth to a child, and we were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, only the two of us in the house. 19 Then this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from beside me while your servant was asleep, and she laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast. 21 When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, behold, he was dead! But when I examined him closely in the morning, behold, he was not my son, whom I had borne!” 22 Then the other woman said, “No! For the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.” But [c]the first woman said, “No! For the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.” So they spoke before the king.

23 Then the king said, “[d]The one says, ‘This is my son who is living, and your son is the dead one’; and [e]the other says, ‘No! For your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’” 24 And the king said, “Get me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 And the king said, “Cut the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other.” 26 But the woman whose child was the living one spoke to the king, for [f]she was deeply stirred over her son, and she said, “Pardon me, my lord! Give her the living child, and by no means kill him!” But the other woman was saying, “He shall be neither mine nor yours; cut him!” 27 Then the king replied, “Give [g]the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him. She is his mother.” 28 When all Israel heard about the judgment which the king had [h]handed down, they feared the king, because they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to [i]administer justice

Exodus 18 1 Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her 3 and her two sons. One son was named Gershom, [1] for Moses said, “I have become an alien in a foreign land”; 4 and the other was named Eliezer, [2] for he said, “My father's God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.” 5 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, together with Moses' sons and wife, came to him in the desert, where he was camped near the mountain of God. 6 Jethro had sent word to him, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.” 7 So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent. 8 Moses told his father-in-law about everything the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel's sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the LORD had saved them. 9 Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things the LORD had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians. 10 He said, “Praise be to the LORD, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.” 12 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God. 13 The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. 14 When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?” 15 Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God's will. 16 Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God's decrees and laws.” 17 Moses' father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. 19 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people's representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20 Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform. 21 But select capable men from all the people–men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain–and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. 23 If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.” 24 Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.
